What is an “FP”?

An “FP”, or Favorite Person relationship/friendship is a complicated relationship in the life of a person with BPD. An FP will be idealized, or put onto a pedestal as the person with BPD will think dichotomously and thus be unable to see the grey area in another’s character (think- “good people sometimes do bad things”). Oftentimes, this relationship or friendship can be healthy! But sometimes… it can become codependent or begin to breed toxicity or resentment. A person with BPD who is not self-aware and/or in treatment will inevitably begin to devalue this person as idealization is unsustainable for extended periods. But because the nature of BPD is rooted in a fear of abandonment, the resulting devaluation will soon overcorrect back to it’s inverse of idealization in a cycle that will not end… until the FP relationship does.
